Javier Mascherano’s Argentina Under-23 team will be looking for a win against Paraguay in the South American pre-Olympic tournament today to move closer to qualifying for the Paris 2024 Olympics next June.
The match is played from 5 p.m. at the Brígido Iriarte National Stadium in Caracas, Venezuela and will be televised by TyC Sports.
Argentina will enter the match after drawing with Venezuela (2-2) last Monday in the first term of the final quadrilateral, which qualifies the top two for Paris.
Against the Venezuelans, Mascherano’s side suffered the sending-off of defenders Valentín Barca and Gonzalo Luján in a game with a busy finish due to a controversial penalty awarded to “vinotinto” which meant a draw.
Barco and Luján have each received one term of suspension and will not be able to play against the “Guaraní” team, but will be available to the coach for the last date against Brazil next Sunday.
If Argentina beat Paraguay and draw in the classic with Brazil, they will be guaranteed a ticket to the Olympics. If there is a tie and there is a winner in Venezuela’s clash with Brazil, they will be forced to win on the final day against the yellow-greens.
If they lose, Mascherano’s men will still have a chance of qualifying if they beat Brazil and wait for Paraguay to do the same against Venezuela.
Paraguay, on the other hand, come motivated by a 1-0 win over Brazil and if they add three more points against Argentina, they will be at the Olympics.
In addition, the teams of Venezuela and Brazil will compete from 8 p.m. and in the same stadium.
