Arsenal return to the UEFA Champions League for the first time in six-and-a-half years when they host PSV Eindhoven at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday.
Arsene Wenger was still in charge of Arsenal when they last made it to the Champions League. An embarrassing 10-2 (aggregate) loss to Bayern Munich in the last 16 of the 2016-17 Champions League marks their last stint in Europe’s elite competition.
A lot has changed since then and the Gunners secured their place in the UEFA Champions League by finishing second in the Premier League last season. The draw was rather kind to them this time and Arsenal faced PSV Eindhoven, Lens and Sevilla in Group B.
Arteta’s men have not been at their best in the opening weeks of the new Premier League season. However, they still managed to claim four wins from their first five matches and are yet to concede a defeat in the new campaign.
Meanwhile, PSV beat SK Sturm Graz 7-2 (on aggregate) and Rangers 7-3 (on aggregate) in the play-offs to secure a place in Europe’s premier competition. They have been in good form in the new season, winning each of their four Eredivisie matches so far with an aggregate score of 13–1.
Peter Bosz’s men saw off NEC Nijmegen 4-0 last Saturday. Luuk de Jong grabbed the equalizer while Noa Lang and Ricardo Pepi also got on the scoresheet for the Dutch giants.
The run to the semi-finals in 2004-05 is the furthest PSV have gone in the Champions League since winning the European Cup in 1987-88.
