Inter Miami 4-1 New England: Lionel Messi brace leads Herons to emphatic win

When Lionel Messi is on the pitch, Inter Miami is undoubtedly the best team in MLS. That much was clear on Saturday at Gillette Stadium as the Herons put on a second-half show in front of a record crowd to beat the New England 4-1 to stay atop the Supporters’ Shield standings.

Lionel Messi has now scored in six of Inter Miami’s seven league games in which he has started this season, scoring in every game apart from his opener. Against the New England Revolution, it was New England that took an early 1-0 lead less than one minute into the game.

With New England up 1-0, Robert Taylor played a pass to Lionel Messi and he would score from inside the penalty area to tie Inter Miami up. Much of the New England crowd would have celebrated Messi’s goal.

Sergio Busquets and Lionel Messi would combine once more in their careers, this time Busquets with a through ball to Lionel Messi, and the 36-year-old would score to give Inter Miami a 2-1 lead.

He would also get an assist on Inter Miami’s last goal of the game, a pass to Luis Suárez, and the Uruguayan would score from inside the penalty area. With his two goals and assist, Messi also became the first player in MLS history to record multiple assists in five consecutive games.

The Argentine has 11 goals and six assists in 10 games with Inter Miami this season and has scored 22 goals for the club, seven behind Gonzalo Higuain’s club record of 22 goals.
