Jamal Musiala celebrated turning 20 with his 11th goal of the Bundesliga season as Bayern Munich returned to top spot by crushing title rivals Union Berlin 3-0 in wintry Bavaria.

The Allianz Arena pitch was covered in a dusting of snow at kick-off and even more fell during the match, but there was nothing sloppy about the home side.

Goals from Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, Kingsley Coman and Musiala saw them lead 3-0 at half-time against a team that started the match level on points with Bayern.

The result saw Bayern move ahead in the title race once again, beating Borussia Dortmund on goal difference, with surprise newcomers Union now three points behind the top two.

Bayern were rewarded for their early dominance in the 31st minute when Choupo-Moting curled a header at the far post across goal and down Coman’s right wing for a corner.

It was the striker’s ninth goal of the season and completed the career of the former Hamburg, Schalke and Mainz player, who has now netted against every current Bundesliga side.

It was 2-0 in the 40th minute when a clever pass from Thomas Muller was played in by Coman, who trickled past goalkeeper Frederik Ronnow before burying a low finish.

Two soon became three, with Bayern in the easy lane when he struck again in first-half stoppage time, Muller turning provider once more when his cut-back from the touchline on the right found Musiala to pounce from close range.

Sadio Mane came off the bench midway through the second half to replace Choupo-Moting as the former Liverpool striker made his first appearance since suffering the leg injury that ruled him out of Senegal’s World Cup campaign in November.

Mane picked up a great chance for Muller when the veteran’s shot hit keeper Ronnow’s head and went over the bar.

Fellow substitute Serge Gnabry headed just wide as Bayern threatened to run riot but eventually made it three.
