Messi’s performance against Shakhtar Donetsk made him the first player in Europe’s top five leagues to record more than ten goals and ten assists in all competitions.

But that wasn’t the only milestone he achieved on the night. In fact, Messi made history by breaking Pelé’s record for goals and assists combined.

The Brazilian legend was involved in 1126 goals during his brilliant career. However, Messi has now surpassed that number as his four-goal haul against Shakhtar Donetsk took him to 1,127.

Additionally, at 35, Messi became the oldest player to score two goals and two assists in a single Champions League game.

The records broken are simply indicative of Messi’s superb start to the campaign, with 11 goals and 12 assists in 16 competitive games.

His performances have been crucial in helping PSG stay at the top of Ligue 1 and he could be expected to play an even more important role as the French giants look to capture the Champions League for the first time.
