Carlo Ancelotti: Madrid will use LaLiga run-in to prepare for UEFA Champions League final

Real Madrid have already secured their 36th La Liga title. Still, head coach Carlo Ancelotti wants to make the most of the remaining games in the build-up to next month’s UEFA Champions League final against Borussia Dortmund.

Real Madrid are trying to win a third trophy this season, having also lifted the Supercopa de Espana in January. Ancelotti says Tuesday’s home game against mid-table Alaves will be a big part of their preparation.

“We have to use these games to get some momentum,” Ancelotti told reporters on Monday after Madrid’s 4-0 win at Granada on Saturday.

“Those who rested against Granada will play tomorrow. We will use it to get into a rhythm and good motivation… the aim is to have the whole team at full strength.”

Ancelotti said the matches would give the likes of goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois and defender Eder Militao, who recently returned from long-term injuries, game time ahead of the June 1 final.

“[Militao] needs to play more minutes. He is progressing very well, improving with every match. Let’s hope he will be at his best in the final,” added the Italian. “We will make the necessary decisions a week before the finals.”

Madrid are unbeaten in all competitions since January and have 90 points from 35 LaLiga games, 15 more than second-placed Girona with three league games.

“After the match against Alaves I will give them three days of rest,” added Ancelotti. “Then we will have two weeks to prepare well for the finals, but the team needs to rest after such a tough season.”
