Wales 0-0 Poland AET (4-5 on pens):Penalty shoot-out heartbreak for Wales as Poland secures UEFA Euro 2024 spot

Wales were left heartbroken as their hopes of qualifying for UEFA Euro 2024 were crushed by a 5-4 penalty shoot-out defeat to Poland in Cardiff on Tuesday night.

Rob Page’s side beat Finland 4-1 in their play-off qualifying semi-final last Thursday and fought back admirably at the Cardiff City Stadium to limit Robert Lewandowski and co. to just one shot on target in the opening 90 minutes and extra time and with his own effort ruled out by VAR.

After four perfect penalties from each side, Krzysztof Piatek scored Poland’s 5th goal, leaving Leeds striker James responsible for the scoring and sending the shootout to sudden death.

But former Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny guessed right and dived to keep out James’ effort, leaving hordes of Welsh fans at the stadium in shock after their side missed out on a 3rd successive European Championship campaign.

At this summer’s tournament in Germany, Poland will play in Group D with the Netherlands, Austria and France.
