Spain 0 – 1 Colombia: Munoz scores stunning winner as Colombia earn famous win over Spain

Crystal Palace defender Daniel Munoz scored a stunning first international goal as Spain’s Euro 2024 preparations began with a surprise 1-0 defeat by Colombia.

Unsurprisingly, Spain dominated possession in the opening half but had very few chances to score – a theme of some of their recent tournament performances.

It was an extremely physical 45 minutes, with a foul coming almost every 30 seconds as the Colombians looked set to knock La Roja down.

The game got the goal it needed just after the hour and it came from a combination of two Premier League players on Premier League ground.

Liverpool’s Luis Díaz brilliantly dribbled past two Spanish defenders before curling a left-footed cross into the box. Crystal Palace right-back Daniel Muñoz’s brilliant save at the back post met the ball past Álex Remiro to give Colombia the lead and send thousands of fans into a frenzy.

Remiro was just 16 minutes into his international career after replacing David Ray at the break when he picked the ball out of his own net.

Another debut came after seven minutes when 17-year-old Barcelona defender Pau Cubarsí came on for Aymeric Laporte in what will surely be the first of many international appearances.

Spain couldn’t find an equaliser, but Luis de la Fuente didn’t seem too upset, especially as he left Rodri on the bench for the full 90 minutes to test things out ahead of the European Championships.

It was a glorious night for the Colombians as they prepared themselves for the Copa América.
