Real Madrid Youngstar Arda Guler Was Disciplined by Carlo Ancelotti After Night Out

Real Madrid have punished summer signing Turkish youngster Arda Guler earlier this season for a series of disciplinary problems, according to reports in Spain.

Arda Guler, who only recently turned 19, joined Real Madrid for €20m from Fenerbahce ahead of the start of the 2023/24 season, spurning advances from rivals Barcelona.

However, the playmaker’s start to life in La Liga was hampered by concurrent knee and muscle injuries, and since returning to fitness in 2024 he has been largely used in cameo roles off the bench.

Relevo reports that Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti has been reluctant to give Arda Guler game time due to off-field disciplinary infractions, often finding him staying out late when he should have been resting. The club punished him for these incidents, which staff believe were ‘gestures of rebellion’ due to his lack of minutes.

Real Madrid staff say Arda Guler has yet to earn the right to be so carefree off the pitch, while the other first-timers are also trusted more to behave well.

Carlo Ancelotti is particularly opposed to harsh sanctions against players for ill-discipline, believing they will only make problems worse, but the club felt they had to step in to correct Arda Guler’s course.

Carlo Ancelotti praised Guler for his late 5-minute appearance from the bench in Saturday’s 4-2 win at Osasuna, which saw him tap the crossbar from his own half.

“Only a great talent can do something like that. It doesn’t matter that he didn’t score, it’s a goal for us,” Carlo Ancelotti said in his post-match press conference.

Arda Guler has made seven appearances for Los Blancos in all competitions so far this season but has only managed 98 minutes. He scored his first goal for the club last week in a 4-0 thrashing of Celta Vigo.
