Atlético Madrid trailed by a single goal heading into the 2nd leg of their clash with Inter Milan at the Wanda Metropolitano.

The game got off to a surprisingly open start, with both sides testing the opposition No.1 as Antoine Griezmann, when well placed, fired wildly over.

Inter grew in confidence and were given breathing room just after the half-hour when Niccolò Barella slipped the ball past Federico Di Marco to slot past Jan Oblak to leave Atletico needing three to go ahead.

However, within two minutes the home side were level on the night as prolific striker Antoine Griezmann grabbed his 19th goal of the season to leave the status quo restored but the home crowd booed.

The second half started in a very similar vein. Inter continued to soak up the pressure and struggled to intervene on the counter-attack, and Inzaghi’s side could only be lulled to sleep 15 minutes into the game when Marcus Thuram burst into flames when one-on-one with Oblak.

Barella had a similar chance moments later after great defensive work by Matteo Darmiano, but his shot only found the gloves of the Atleti striker. It wasn’t over for Diego Simeone’s side, however, and moments after Memphis Depay hit the inside of the post, he went one better, finding the bottom corner from 10 yards and finally giving Simeone the goal their game deserved.

Amid the cacophony of noise in Madrid, Atleti pressed for a winner and Inter appeared to be on the ropes.

They had a chance to find a second before the final whistle, Griezmann finding substitute Riquelme but the Argentine couldn’t hold his shot and sent his effort from 12 yards into the top row of the Wanda Metropolitano.

Extra time beckoned and it was still the home side who were stronger. However, as time dragged on both sides took less chances, knowing that one mistake could spell the end of their Champions League journey, preferring to risk a penalty shoot-out.

After mistakes from Alexis Sanchez and Davy Klassen, Lautaro Martinez fired his spot-kick over the bar to send Atletico Madrid into the quarter-finals of the competition.
