Saudi Pro League: Ronaldo facing Saudi investigation over obscene gesture after Messi taunts

Cristiano Ronaldo is expected to be the subject of an investigation after he appeared to make an obscene gesture in response to chanting at Lionel Messi in a Saudi Pro League match.

The Portugal international opened the scoring for Al Nassr in Sunday’s 3-2 win over Al Shadab, with Anderson Talisca securing all three points in the second half.

At full-time, fans could be heard chanting ‘Messi‘ – Ronaldo’s long-time rival for the Ballon d’Or during his time in European football – and videos on social media captured the former Real Madrid, Manchester United and Juventus forward’s reaction.

The 39-year-old was seen cupping his hand towards Al Shadab supporters before repeatedly pumping his hand in front of his pelvic area.

Saudi newspaper Asharq al-Awsat claims the country’s national football federation (SAFF) has launched an investigation, with some pundits from the region believing Ronaldo should be punished despite his high profile among Saudi Pro League recruits in recent years.

It’s not the first time Ronaldo’s lewd physical display has landed him in hot water.

At the end of April’s 2-0 defeat to Al Hilal, he appeared to grab his genitalia on his way to the dugout, while tucking the same team’s scarf over his shorts before discarding it after Al Nassr lost 2-0 in the Riyadh Cup final.

While Ronaldo is the current top scorer in this year’s Saudi Pro League with 22 strikes, his side Al Nassr are seven points behind Al Hilal at the top of the table.

The four-time Ballon d’Or winner will be eyeing another goal or two on Thursday when his side take on Al Hazem, who are bottom of the Saudi top flight with just 14 points from 21 games.
