PSG want to sign Barcelona’s Gavi as part of Kylian Mbappe rebuild

Paris Saint-Germain have added Barcelona midfielder Gavi to their summer transfer wishlist as they prepare for life without Kylian Mbappe, according to a report.

Kylian Mbappe has informed PSG he will leave this summer – a departure that will save the club around €200m (£171m) a year – while a legally binding player-club agreement will ensure PSG are protected should Kylian Mbappe leave on a free transfer.

The deal will set Kylian Mbappe back almost €80m (£69m), so while PSG may technically lose their star on a free transfer, his departure won’t leave them out of pocket.

Anticipating a big chunk of funds to be freed up, PSG have drawn up a list of potential targets for this summer’s transfer window, with The Athletic reporting that Barca midfielder Gavi features prominently.

PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi is said to be a big fan of Gavi, as is manager Luis Enrique, who handed the 19-year-old his senior debut for Spain.

Gavi is under contract at Barca until 2026 and has a €1bn (£855m) release clause in his contract.

Barca consider Gavi an “unsellable asset” but the club’s well-known financial situation could force them into some tough decisions this summer. Gavi’s interest in the transfer is not yet known.

PSG’s shortlist includes several potential targets in a number of positions, with the club also expected to pursue a new striker as a direct replacement for Mbappe.

Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford and Napoli’s Victor Osimhen are among those being considered, while RB Leipzig forward Benjamin Sesko is also admired.
