After a second-half red card, Bayern Munich suffered a shock defeat away to Lazio in the first leg of the Round of 16 tie.

It didn’t take long for both sides to settle into the expected pattern of the evening as Bayern Munich dominated possession and probed the Lazio backline in the opening five minutes.

Harry Kane was on the end of a half-chance from close range, but a last-ditch effort from the Lazio defender ensured the Englishman could not break the deadlock.

Bayern Munich  created the best chance of the half when a great team save ended with Jamal Musiala’s effort on the spot, but the youngster sent his shot just wide of the bar to spare Lazio’s blushes.

However, the home side exploded after the restart and Manuel Neuer’s heroic save was the only thing that prevented Gustav Isaksen from putting the home side ahead.

It got worse for Bayern when Dayot Upamecano was sent off for a late tackle in the box on Isaksen as Lazio saw a penalty awarded while Bayern Munich  were down a man.

Ciro Immobile stepped up to coolly dispatch the Penalty to fire Lazio into the lead.

Bayern Munich player ratings

GK: Manuel Neuer (c) – 6/10 – Not too busy but made a crucial save early in the second half when Lazio probably should have gone ahead before they did. No chance with a penalty.

RB: Noussair Mazraoui – 7/10 – Looked like a decent attack when others were missing.

CB: Dayot Upamecano – 3/10 – Looked like the weak link in the defense even before he converted the penalty and was sent off.

CB: Kim Min-jae – 6/10 – Nearly lost a pass all night. Oddly not so good in the air.

LB: Raphael Guerreiro – 4/10 – He was not strong in his duels and contributed little going forward.

CM: Joshua Kimmich – 6/10 – Controlled a lot of the ball in midfield but missed the target with an early chance that could have made it a completely different game.

CM: Leon Goretzka – 5/10 – Gave Musial a chance that the winger failed to capitalize on. Otherwise, he saw a lot of the ball without doing enough to break Lazio down.

RM: Leroy Sane – 5/10 – Disappointing lack of consistent impact.

AM: Thomas Muller – 7/10 – The best creative spark for Bayern on an otherwise difficult night.

LM: Jamal Musiala – 6/10 – Got into good positions in the box on a number of occasions without ever finding a way past the defenders in front of him. Put the ball over the bar on his best chance.

ST: Harry Kane – 4/10 – It was clear from the start that Lazio were going to cut service.

SUBSTITUTE: Matthijs de Ligt (73′ for Goretzka) – 6/10

SUB: Mathys Tel (81′ for Sane) – /10

SUB: Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting (82′ for Muller)

Man of the match – Matteo Guendouzi (Lazio)
