Inter Miami 1- 1 Newell’s Old Boys: Messi faces boyhood club as Inter Miami draw with Newell’s Old Boys

Inter Miami’s tough and demanding pre-season came to an end on Thursday as Lionel Messi took to the pitch against his boyhood club Newell’s Old Boys for a 1-1 draw.

Messi started the match and went 60 minutes, empty-handed in his two big chances to score, but put on a show in a game that meant much more than just the final score. It all started for Messi at the Argentinian club when he joined the team from his hometown in Rosario at the age of just six.

Still, with 90 minutes of football remaining, Shanyder Borgelin capitalized on his substitute appearance to put Inter Miami in front just after the hour mark. The home team was better throughout the first half and most of the second half, but they could not finish many chances.

In the end, Inter Miami caught up with their defensive woes with a horrendous display in midfield that led to the equalizer with seven minutes remaining.

Inter Miami now prepares for their MLS season opener against Real Salt Lake next Wednesday, looking to keep their aging stars healthy for the playoffs and beyond.
