Although Lionel Messi and Erling Haaland finished tied on points, it was the Inter Miami star who came out on top in the 2023 FIFA The Best awards.
Lionel Messi won The Best again, this time for his performances for Inter Miami and Argentina in 2023. Interestingly, the 36-year-old got the upper hand despite finishing in a tie with Erling Haaland in the voting, but FIFA had an official explanation for this.
“The winner of the 2022 World Cup and the Norwegian international Haaland received a combined 48 points, so they were separated by the number of first-choice nominations that Messi received in the vote from the captains of the national teams according to the allocation rules (Article 12),” explains the governing body’s official website.
Messi received 13 first-choice nominations from national team captains, while Haaland had 11. Kylian Mbappe, who also ran for the award and finished third with 35 points, was the first choice of nine captains.
