Athletic Bilbao vs Barcelona Possible Starting lineups for Copa Del Rey quarterfinals 2024

Barcelona visit San Mames on Wednesday to face Athletic Bilbao in the Copa del Rey quarter-finals.

After their Spanish Super Cup final loss to Real Madrid in Saudi Arabia, the Blaugrana seem to have regained their enthusiasm. Since that fateful night in Riyadh, Xavi’s side bounced back with a 3-1 win over Unionistas in the last round of the cup, followed by a 4-2 win over Real Betis on Sunday.

The reigning Spanish champions almost dropped points in the league again as Ferran Torres’ double was canceled out by Isco’s quick strike. But Joao Felix restored Barcelona’s lead in the 90th minute before Torres completed his hat-trick to score his fourth of the night.

However, the Catalans remain seven points behind Real Madrid, just behind leaders Girona, who have a game in hand. The Copa del Rey is thus perhaps their only shot at silverware this season, and their renewed team spirit will certainly help in that regard.

Athletic Bilbao are just three points behind Barcelona in the league table, having played a game more. Their recent form has been solid, with Los Leones losing just one of their last 15 games in all competitions, although that came in their last game.

Valencia ended their dream run at the weekend with a narrow 1-0 victory in La Liga. Hugo Duro broke Bilbao’s resistance in the 61st minute and condemned them to their first defeat in almost three months.

Before that, which team was the last to beat the Basque Country? You guessed it; Barcelona.

Athletic Bilbao have also fared well in their Copa del Rey campaign so far. They beat Rubi (2-1), Cayon (3-0), Eibar (3-0) and most recently Alaves (2-0).

Athletic (4-2-3-1): Simón; Lekue, Vivian, Paredes, Yuri; De Galarreta, Vesga; Berenguer, Sancet, Williams; Guruzeta

Barcelona (4-2-3-1): Peña; Kounde, Araujo, Christensen, Balde; Gündogan, De Jong; Yamal, Pedri, Ferran; Lewandowski
