Algeria will face Burkina Faso at the Stade Bouaké on Saturday in a second group stage match of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Algeria, the 2019 champions, were held to a 1-1 draw by Angola in their opening campaign as their AFCON winless run extended to four matches. Baghdad Bounedjah broke the deadlock in the 18th minute, assisted by Youcef Belaïli. Bounedjah almost doubled his side’s lead but his outrageous header was ruled out after the player was flagged for offside.
Angola came back stronger in the second half and their persistence was rewarded in the 68th minute when substitute Mabululu converted from the penalty spot to level the scores.
Burkina Faso went behind against Mauritania late in the opening game of their campaign when Bertrand Traoré scored the game-winner in the sixth minute of extra time. They were awarded a penalty after a VAR review and the Aston Villa striker made no mistake as he converted from the spot.
