Is Erling Haaland playing Club World Cup final 2023?

Manchester City fans, hoping their team will capitalize on Arsenal’s defeat to Aston Villa on December 9, were left with a scare when it emerged that Erling Haaland would miss the game against Luton Town a day later.

Haaland, who set a new Premier League record of 36 goals in a single season in 2022/23, played in all of City’s first 15 games of 2023/24. At the start of December, he led the Golden Boot standings with 14 goals and four assists, moving ahead of Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah.

The news that he will miss the match at Kenilworth Road was a particular blow for City, who have been on a four-game winless run in the Premier League – something that last happened under Pep Guardiola in 2017.

In the end, City won the game 2-1 without their talismanic striker after the goal, but they certainly won’t want his absence to last too long, especially after their form took a turn for the worse in a frustrating 2-2 draw against Crystal Palace.

When will Erling Haaland return?

It is not yet clear when Haaland will return. Guardiola said the club would monitor the issue regularly before giving a prognosis.

Haaland took part in the UEFA Champions League match at Red Star Belgrade on 13 December, which he probably would have done anyway, as the title holders had already secured their place in the knockout rounds and so did not need to win that match.

He was again unavailable against Palace before leaving with City for the Club World Cup in Saudi Arabia.

However, ahead of the 3-0 semi-final win over Urawa Red Diamonds, it became clear that Haaland would have a short watch as he was withdrawn from the 23-man squad handed over to FIFA, along with fellow absentees Kevin De Bruyne and Jeremy Doku. .

“Erling still can’t train,” Guardiola confirmed after the match.

Following the Club World Cup final against Fluminense on Friday 22 December, City return to Premier League action at Everton five days later.
