When is the draw for UEFA Euro 2024?

UEFA Euro Trophy

Fans of international football in Europe didn’t wait long before the next big tournament was upon us.

After the 2022 World Cup was held in November and December due to the warmer climate in host country Qatar, the wait for the European Championship, which usually comes two years after the World Cup, is shorter than usual.

But Euro 2024 in Germany is now months away and the qualification process is drawing to a close for all hopeful nations.

How does the Euro 2024 draw and format work?

With Germany automatically qualifying as hosts, the additional 20 places at Euro 2024 are allocated to teams that have passed the qualification process as winners and runners-up from the 10 qualifying groups.

Twelve teams will compete for the final three places at Euro 2024 based on their performance in the 2022/23 UEFA Nations League. The play-offs will be played in March to whittle the 12 teams down to the final three – of course from the sides that didn’t qualify for the tournament via the first available route.

Teams will be divided into four banks (1, 2, 3 and 4) based on their results in the qualifiers. There are six groups (A to F), with Germany already assigned in position A1 – meaning they are the highest-placed team in Group A. Groups B to F will then be drawn, with four teams in each group.

The three teams that advance to the playoffs will be in Pot 4.

In terms of how the tournament works, the group stage of 24 teams will be followed by the round of 16, where the top two from each group and the top four players in third place will advance. Then it’s a straight knockout to the final.
