Spain welcome Georgia to the Estadio Jose Zorrilla on Sunday in a Euro 2024 qualifier as the hosts look to consolidate top spot in Group A.
The job is pretty much done for Spain as their place at next summer’s Euro 2024 is already secured with two games in Group A, one of them against Georgia. But they will go all out to continue their recent good form and ensure they lead Scotland to the top.
The home side didn’t quite get their way in this qualifying campaign. After a rocky start to the campaign where they lost at Hampden, La Roja have returned to normal duty and once again look one of the favorites for the finals in Germany.
Luis de la Fuente’s men won comfortably in Cyprus on Thursday to jump two points clear of a Scotland side who needed a late Lawrence Shankland goal to avoid another defeat in Tbilisi. The hosts will now look to make it seven wins from eight in Group A when they entertain Georgia in Valladolid.
Georgia, meanwhile, has no chance of progressing this way to the next round. But they did not disappoint in the group stage and thanks to their performances in the UEFA Nations League, they are in the playoffs.
They followed up a 4-0 win over Cyprus with a hard-fought 2-2 draw against Scotland on Thursday. They twice took the lead through Napoli’s Khvich Kvaratskhelia but suffered a late heartbreak to leave them fourth in the table with eight points.
Spain beat Sunday’s opponents 7-1 when the two met in Tbilisi, Georgia. The Hard Tackle takes a closer look at the clash ahead of the last meeting between the two sides.
