Man City 3-0 Young Boys: Player ratings as City qualify for knockout stages

Erling Haaland scored his 38th and 39th UEFA Champions League goals as Manchester City sealed their place in the last 16.

The Norwegian broke the deadlock from the penalty spot after Matheus Nunes was brought down by Sandro Lauper – who saw red in the second half for a second bookable offence.

A stunning goal from Phil Foden doubled the advantage before the break when he received the ball from Grealish before dancing past two Young Boys defenders and slotting into the bottom corner from a tight angle.

Haaland grabbed his second early in the second half, picking up the ball just outside the area before smashing a rifle shot into the top corner as the holders went 12 points clear to continue their trophy defense.

Man City player ratings

GK: Ederson – 7/10 – A typically wonderful display of passing. Never Tested Young Boys.

RB: Kyle Walker – 7/10 – Came on for Manuel Akanji at short notice and made no mistake. Unsurprisingly, Walker was more influential in the Young Boys’ half, making some strong runs down the right and testing Racioppi with a good free-kick.

CB: Ruben Dias – 7/10 – When the Young Boys countered, Dias was a barrier and often forced the Swiss side into mistakes in the final third of the first half. No more than a spectator in the second.

CB: John Stones – 6/10 – Played in a free center back role and appeared all over the pitch for City. Subbed off at half-time, possibly to rest for the weekend game against Chelsea.

LB: Josko Gvardiol – 7/10 – Rarely tested defensively but looks so confident in a sky blue shirt. Effortless at times and made some powerful bursts down the left wing.

CM: Rico Lewis – 6/10 – Not quite the sharpest but didn’t look out of place in a strong City line-up. A bit of hesitation in the final third.

CM: Mateo Kovacic – 8/10 – Graceful, glides through midfield with ease and produces several defensive passes. He replaced Rodri emphatically, although he was rarely required to put on a defensive head.

RM: Phil Foden – 8/10 – Beautiful goal to give City a deserved second before the break and kept the Young Boys defenders honest on the right. It makes the game look incredibly simple, and to be honest, this one was.

AM: Matheus Nunes – 6/10 – Clean turnaround to win the penalty but still looks a bit raw. A few misplaced passes and fluffed shots as he tried to make a definitive impact on the game.

LM: Jack Grealish – 7/10 – Saw a lot of the ball, especially in the second half. Some branded mazes are running, just missing a bit of the final product.

ST: Erling Haaland – 8/10 – Takes the penalty well and hits a beautiful shot from distance after half-time. He made some great runs into the channel and effectively held the ball for the home side. Subbed to keep him for the Chelsea game.

SUB: Nathan Ake (46′ for Stones) – 6/10 – Had absolutely nothing to do defensively. Probably didn’t misplace a single pass.

SUB: Kalvin Phillips (61′ for Walker) – 6/10

SUB: Oscar Bobb (61′ for Haaland) – 6/10

SUB: Jeremy Doku (80′ for Kovacic) – 7/10

Players not used: Scott Carson (GK), Stefan Ortega (GK), Rodri, Bernardo Silva, Julian Alvarez.
