Athens will welcome Ajax in the UEFA Europa League at the OPAP Arena on Thursday (October 5).
The home side opened their campaign with a 3-2 win at Brighton & Hove Albion. Joao Pedro made sure the Seagulls twice canceled out Athen’s lead, but Ezequiel Ponce scored the winner in the 84th minute to deny Brighton an unbeaten start to their European debut.
Meanwhile, Ajax drew 3-3 at home to Marseille in their opening game. They squandered a two-goal lead in the first half. Kenneth Taylor’s strike for Ajax in the 52nd minute was then canceled out by Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who scored his second goal of the game in the 78th minute.
The Eredivisie giants then ended their five-game unbeaten run with a 2-0 defeat at OFI on Sunday. After losing 4-0 to arch-rivals Feyenoord in the Eredivisie last week in a postponed match, the hosts’ struggles continued.
Ajax’s match against RKC Waalwijk was abandoned last week after Waalwijk goalkeeper Etienne Vaessen was seriously injured in the 85th minute and had to be taken off the pitch immediately.
