Senegal will welcome Algeria in a friendly at the Stade Me Abdoulaye Wade on Tuesday.
Both teams finished top of their groups in qualifying for the 2023 African Cup of Nations. Senegal topped Group L with 14 points after four wins and two draws, while Algeria were the top-scoring team in qualifying. They finished with 16 points from five wins and a draw.
Teranga Lions, who are also the defending champions, are the team to beat in the upcoming Afcon. They haven’t cooled off since their continental triumph two years ago. However, coach Aliou Cisse says his mind is not on the Afcon finals at the moment, but rather on fine-tuning for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification.
Algeria is another team to watch out for at AFCON 2023. The 2019 African champions failed to live up to expectations in the previous edition and were eliminated in the group stage. However, the team has been revived and is enjoying the purple spot once more, winning seven times and drawing twice in their last 10 matches.
The Fennec Foxes are also preparing for their World Cup qualifiers scheduled for next month, but not against formidable opponents. They will host Somalia before traveling to Mozambique. That doesn’t mean they will take their friendlies lightly, says coach Djamel Belmadi. The last two clashes between Senegal and Algeria ended in a stalemate.
