Colombia and Venezuela face off in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers

Colombia and Venezuela will kick off their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers when they square off at the Estadio Metropolitano on Thursday.

Having failed to win in the last seven meetings between the two nations, Fernando Batista’s men will head into the opening group stage looking to get one past the hosts.

Colombia put in a performance of the highest quality as they cruised to a comfortable 2-0 win over Germany in a friendly on 20 June.

Nestor Lorenzo’s men have now won three games in a row and are unbeaten in their last 11, recording nine wins and two draws.

Colombia’s last defeat came in February 2022 when they were beaten 1–0 by Argentina in a 2022 World Cup qualifier.

Meanwhile, Venezuela kept up their good run last time out with a 1-0 win over Guatemala at Rentschler Field.

Batista’s side are now on a seven-game unbeaten run, with five wins and two draws since a 1-0 loss against Iceland in September 2022, which was the exception.

Next up for Venezuela is an opponent they have failed to beat in their last seven attempts, losing four and drawing three since a 1-0 win in June 2015.
