Lionel Messi is one goal away from South America’s World Cup qualifying record.

Messi needs just one goal to become the all-time top scorer in World Cup qualifying in South America. Uruguay’s Luis Suárez currently has 29 goals and Messi has 28 goals.

The World Cup winner scored his first goal in a World Cup qualifier in South America in 2007 against Venezuela. He scored four goals during qualification for the 2010 World Cup.

During the 2014 World Cup qualifiers, Messi scored 10 goals, while he scored seven goals in the 2018 qualifiers. During the qualification for the 2022 World Cup, Messi scored seven goals.

Argentina face Ecuador in their first 2026 World Cup qualifier on Thursday. Their second match is against Bolivia on Tuesday.
