Just days after Lionel Messi secured Inter Miami’s first ever trophy, the Argentine superstar will set out for another when they face FC Cincinnati in the U.S. Open Cup semifinals.
Inter Miami reached this point without an assist from Messi, beating lower league sides Charleston Battery and Birmingham Legion as well as MLS opposition Nashville SC in earlier rounds.
However, with Messi and his former Barcelona team-mates Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba on the pitch, the club look much more powerful and will now be hoping to not only push for the US Open Cup title but also a historic return to the league. Inter Miami is in last place in the Eastern Conference and has just 11 games left to close a huge 14-point gap and clinch a playoff spot.
But before that daunting task, they have another steep mountain to climb in FC Cincinnati, who lead Major League Soccer in points two-thirds of the way through the season. The Columbus Crew held them to 3-0 over the weekend, but they remain a formidable opponent in their own right.
