The 2023 Women’s World Cup will officially begin with co-hosts New Zealand raising the curtain on the tournament in a Group A match against Norway.
New Zealand are not expected to escape a tough group with two European teams as the Football Ferns also face Switzerland, but if they can satiate the crowd it could give them the jolt needed to pull off an upset.
In truth, there is little precedent for this matchup – all previous hosts of the Women’s World Cup have been countries at the highest level of the women’s game. Ranked 26th in the world, New Zealand are the lowest-ranked Women’s World Cup hosts in the tournament’s history.
So it’s hard to know how much the hosts’ addition will boost the Football Ferns against 12th-placed Norway, who are a global power and considered, if not one of the title contenders, then at least another level below.
