Manchester City defender Nathan Ake has extended his contract with the club until 2027, the European and Premier League champions have announced.

The Netherlands international has extended his previous contract by two years and has committed to the Etihad Stadium side for the next four seasons.

Ake was an integral part of Pep Guardiola’s side during City’s memorable 2022-23 treble-winning campaign, making 41 appearances in all competitions.

The 28-year-old said: “This is the best club in the world, no doubt about it. Being a Manchester City player makes me incredibly proud every day.

“It is a football club that expects excellence in every area, which contributes to the perfect environment being enhanced. It keeps me going and makes me better. I’m at a stage in my career where I want to continue to develop, and I can definitely do that here.

“Pep is the best manager in football – a genius who made me see the game differently – so to be able to work with him for longer is a real privilege. I am so grateful to him for everything he has done for me personally and professionally.”

The former Chelsea player joined City three years ago in a £41million deal from Bournemouth.

At first he had to wait for his opportunity, but he came of age last term and proved to be a reliable player at center back as well as at left-back.

Director of Football Txiki Begiristain said: “We have been delighted with Nathan’s development so it is great news for this football club that he is extending his time with us.

“There is no doubt that he was a very important part of our three-point success last season, but I believe he can be even better.”
