USA U20 face Uruguay U20 at Estadio Unico Madre de Ciudades in the FIFA U-20 World Cup on Sunday (June 4).
The USA started the year with a terrible record, losing four of their first five games and drawing one. They also conceded ten goals against four conceded. However, things seem to have straightened out after their scintillating form at the ongoing U-20 World Cup in Argentina.
The Stars and Stripes have had an unblemished run through the group stage, winning all three matches to top Group B with nine points. They defeated New Zealand 4–0 in the round of 16 to earn a place in the quarterfinals. Uruguay could be a tough nut to crack given the quality of the team, but the USA should be up to the task.
Uruguay are aiming for their first title in the competition. They came very close twice, in 1997 and 2013, when they finished second. The South Americans won bronze once and finished fourth three times. However, those records “must be erased in our backyard this time,” manager Marcelo Broli said.
The Cains lost just one game in the group stage, against England, winning three to finish second with six points in Group E. They were also responsible for knocking surprise package Gambia out of the competition – 1-0 in the round of 16. However, Uruguay’s title will face its toughest test yet on Sunday.
