Israel U20 and Brazil U20 face off at the Estadio San Juan del Bicentenario in the FIFA U-20 World Cup on Saturday (June 3).
Israel’s fairytale campaign at the U20 World Cup continued after they qualified for the quarter-finals. They beat Uzbekistan 1-0 in Mendoza on Tuesday (May 31), with Anan Khalaili breaking the deadlock in added time.
Now they are ready to face one of the best teams in the tournament and the biggest favorites for the title. Brazil manager Ramon Menezes said his team will respect and never underestimate Israel “who have been phenomenal in the competition so far”.
Brazil have their sights set on glory as they bid for a sixth title, which would match the record set by Argentina, who are now out of contention. The hosts were knocked out by Nigeria after a 2-0 loss on Wednesday. However, Brazil will need to guard against overconfidence, having failed to progress past this stage five times.
The Seleco Under-20s are likely to stick with their 4-5-1 formation when they face Israel, who interestingly use the same formation. It has worked well so far for Brazil, who are able to absorb and frustrate opponents in their dense midfield. However, Israel boasts a few players like Omer Senior who could break free.
