The United States Under-20 team will begin its elimination journey to the 2023 FIFA U-20 World Cup against New Zealand in the round of 16 on Tuesday.
After finishing top of Group B with a perfect nine points from three matches, the USA put themselves in a strong position for the knockout round.
Head coach Mikey Varas led the team to wins over Ecuador, Fiji and Slovakia to now tie New Zealand third in Group A. The Kiwis picked up four points against Guatemala and Uzbekistan, but the hosts were knocked out by Argentina in the final, where they only qualify via table for third place.
From this point on, regardless of the strength of the opponent, it’s win or go home for all involved. The winner of that match will advance to face the winner of Uruguay or Gambia in the quarter-finals, with a potential match against Brazil possibly looming in the semi-finals.
