The United States will begin their journey to the 2023 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Argentina when they begin Group B play against Ecuador on Saturday.
They will be looking to improve on their tepid record at the event, with their highest ever finish coming from fourth place in 1989.
The U.S. has been eliminated in the quarterfinals in each of the last three events, most recently in 2019 when they were eliminated by Ecuador. However, they are the only country to have reached this stage in all three tournaments, a model of consistency, if not higher-level results.
The current USA U-20 squad, coached by Mikey Varas, features six players who were called up by the senior national team at one stage, although they have failed to secure the services of several key experienced players who could provide additional firepower.
