Japan U20 will take on Colombia U20 at Estadio Único Diego Armando Maradona in the FIFA U20 World Cup on Wednesday.
Both teams are looking for a second win to consolidate their dominant position in Group C after their wins in the opening matches. Colombia are at the top thanks to a 2-1 win over Israel on Sunday, while Japan beat Senegal 1-0 to take second place. The eventual winners of the duel qualify for the round of 16.
Samurai Blue’s best finish at the championship was a runner-up finish in 1999 in Nigeria. They have reached the quarter-finals three times since their debut campaign in 1979. Japan had a near-flawless run at the AFC U20 Asian Cup last March, losing only to Iraq in the semi-finals 5-3 on penalties.
Colombia boasts some players from top European clubs such as goalkeeper Alexei Rojas from Arsenal, defender Devan Tanton from Fulham and Yáser Asprilla from Watford. Gustavo Puerta, who scored the opening goal against Israel, is at Germany’s FC Nuremberg, while Daniel Luna is contracted to Spain’s Mallorca.
