France U20 will face off against Gambia U20 at Estadio Malvinas Argentinas in the FIFA U20 World Cup on Thursday.
France must avoid another straight defeat after a 2-1 setback against South Korea in their Group F opener. Lille youngster Alan Virginius converted a 70th-minute penalty to raise expectations of a possible equalizer or victory. But the Asians maintained their slender lead until the final whistle to claim top spot in the group.
Les Bleuets, who won the championship in 2013, will be hoping to bounce back by picking up their first three points against Gambia on Thursday. But coach Landry Chauvin admitted it would be a difficult mission for his side due to the “breathless attacking pace of the Young Scorpions”.
The Gambia are second in the group with three points thanks to a 2-1 win over Honduras. Adama Bojang grabbed an early goal for the African internationals after just one minute, but Aceituno stopped them four minutes later. And even though it looked like they were heading for a 1-1 draw, Bojang grabbed the winner in the 84th minute.
The Young Scorpions are making their second appearance after their debut in 2007, which ended in the Round of 16. They qualified for the ongoing edition after finishing second in the 2023 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations, which was won by Senegal. Buoyed by their first win, Gambia are expected to withstand the challenge of France.
