Alejo Véliz and Valentín Carboni both scored for the Argentina U20 national team in their 2-1 win vs. Uzbekistan at the U20 World Cup.
Argentina Under-20 national team coach Javier Mascherano got his team off to a winning start. Despite having much of the ball, it was Uzbekistan who took a 1-0 lead after Makhmudjon Makhamadjonov beat goalkeeper Gomes Gerth at his near post to give Uzbekistan a 1-0 lead.
Javier Mascherano’s side equalized just minutes later. Agustín Giay sent a cross to Alej Véliz and his header was first cleared by the keeper, but fell into the net and Argentina would equalize.
Moments later, Giay’s tackle in his penalty area led to a penalty. The referee went to VAR and spoke into the microphone saying that he had changed his decision and it was not a penalty.
Valentín Barco played a short pass to Valentín Carboni and the number 10 would drive into the box to score with his effort to make it 2-1 for Argentina.
Argentina had more possession in the second half and Javier Mascherano made several changes. Federico Redondo was replaced by Máximo Perron, while Luka Romero was replaced by Matías Soulé.
Mascherano would make three more changes. The final substitution was Ignacio Miramón for Mateo Tanlongo, Gino Infantino for Valentín Carboni and Ignacio Maestro Puch for Alejo Véli.
They would get a 2-1 win and put Argentina on top of Group A at the U20 World Cup. Their next game is against Guatemala on Tuesday.
