They may not have their first-team players available for this one, but when the USA and Mexico meet in a friendly on Wednesday night in Glendale, Ariz., the bite and intensity of the rivalry will be felt just the same.

It is the first meeting between the long-time foes in 2023 and there is sure to be another in the CONCACAF Nations League semi-finals in June. The two nations could also face off in the 2023 Gold Cup later this summer.

As this April friendly falls outside FIFA’s official international window, both teams’ rosters are made up mostly of domestic players who have been released for international duty. Only two players are active in Europe and both are right backs: American Sergino Dest (AC Milan) and Mexican Julian Araujo (Barcelona reserve).

It’s a big opportunity for players on the fringes of both national teams: home-grown veterans and a collection of younger talent who will all be hoping to make an impact.
