UEFA Champions League battles between Real Madrid and Chelsea are becoming a regular feature on the European calendar ahead of a crucial quarterfinal second leg.
Los Blancos eased to a 2-0 victory in Madrid in the reverse fixture where Frank Lampard faced an uphill battle to keep his side in the competition.
Both teams have beaten each other en route to winning the competition in two of the last three seasons, but only one of them can advance to the semi-finals again, in 2023.
Thomas Tuchel edged past Zinedine Zidane in the 2021 semi-final as the Blues beat Manchester City in the final, but Carlo Ancelotti sealed revenge on his old side in last season’s quarter-finals before tasting glory over Liverpool in Paris.
It appeared to level the playing field ahead of the 2023 game, but continued problems at Stamford Bridge led to the sacking of Graham Potter – temporarily reappointed by Lampard – and Ancelotti ruthlessly capitalised.
