Paris Saint-Germain 0-1 Lyon: PSG’s second successive home defeat breathes life into Ligue 1 title race

Paris Saint-Germain suffered their second home defeat in a row as Lyon won 1-0 at the Parc des Princes to breathe life into Ligue 1’s title race.

Christophe Galtier’s men lost 2-0 at home to Rennes before the international break and were again disappointing as they suffered back-to-back league defeats for the first time since September 2020.

The story of the first half revolved around two penalties: one that Alexandre Lacazette hit against the post and one that was disallowed in PSG’s favor for an apparent handball.

Still, Lyon were undeterred by Lacazette’s miss and sealed only PSG’s second league win since 2007 thanks to Bradley Barcola.

PSG should have taken the lead in the fourth minute but Vitinho inexplicably skipped over from close range after Kylian Mbappe’s disguised pass found him.

Mbappe was similarly wasteful moments later as he poked across goal after a wonderful one-on-one with Lionel Messi.

However, PSG were lucky not to concede in the 39th minute – Lacazette hit the post from the spot after being teed up by Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Lyon were probably also lucky at half-time when Dejan Lovren escaped a penalty for handling in the area.

They took advantage of that relaxation at the beginning of the second half.

Sael Kumbedi crossed the six-yard box and Barcola – a first-half substitute – turned for Donnarumma, who desperately beat it by diving to his near post.

Barcola almost got a second when he forced a fine save from Donnarumma just after the hour, but it didn’t matter as PSG failed to salvage a draw and there were boos from the stands at the final whistle.
