After failing to net in their midweek defeat to Barcelona, Real Madrid were again kept off the scoresheet in a 0-0 draw with Real Betis.
Real Madrid fired another blank as their LaLiga title hopes were further dented in a goalless draw away at Real Betis.
The reigning champions knew there was no real room for error at the Estadio Benito Villamarin after Barcelona’s narrow 1-0 home win over Valencia on Sunday.
However, on the back of not registering an attempt on target in their 1-0 Copa del Rey semi-final loss to Barca in the first leg, Madrid once again failed to strike.
Karim Benzema had a first-half goal ruled out by VAR, but Carlo Ancelotti’s side were otherwise subdued as they could only erase nine points ahead of leaders Barca.
Benzema thought he had given Madrid the lead with a superb free-kick early on, but it was ruled out after a VAR review for the ball resting on Antonio Rudiger’s arm against the wall.
While the visitors failed to get a shot on target before half-time, Betis tested Thibaut Courtois twice and Ayoze Perez forced the Madrid keeper into a fine save.
Claudio Bravo finally had something to do at the start of the second period when he pushed away Benzema’s first attempt from close to the penalty area.
Betis continued to look threatening and would have been in front had it not been for a great save from Courtois to deny Borja Iglesias who had time to stand up and fire into the box.
Rodrygo and Dani Ceballos both had shots off target from good positions as Madrid, who started with Lucas Vazquez and Eduardo Camavinga at full-back, continued to toil.
Bravo stood firm in the Betis goal in a nervy finish to ensure the points were shared in Andalusia.
