Arsenal 1-1 Sporting CP (3-3 agg, 3-5 pens): Martinelli penalty heartache ends Gunners’ UEFA Europa League hopes

Antonio Adan’s heroics frustrated Arsenal at Emirates Stadium as the Gunners Europa League campaign was brought to an abrupt end.

Arsenal crashed out of the Europa League after a penalty shoot-out defeat to Sporting CP in the UEFA Europa League round-of-16 at Emirates Stadium.

Granit Xhaka gave the Gunners a first-half lead but that advantage was canceled out in spectacular style by Pote’s long-range effort to send the tie into extra time.

Adan sealed the tie at full length with crucial saves to deny Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Magalhaes, although Sporting finished with 10 men after Manuel Ugarte was sent off.

Adan’s heroics came again in the spot-kick as he denied Gabriel Martinelli’s effort before Nuno Santos scored to send Sporting through to the quarter-finals.

The Gunners took the lead in the 19th minute when Xhaka played a superb ball over the top to Martinelli to force Adan into a save, but the Switzerland international was on hand to clear the rebound.

Sporting started the second period on the front foot and found the equalizer shortly after the hour mark in stunning fashion, Pote spotting Ramsdale off his line and lobbing past the England international from 46 yards.

The Gunners stopper redeemed himself 10 minutes later when he raced off his line to block Marcus Edwards’ effort with his face after the former Tottenham youngster was put through by Ricardo Esgaio.

Trossard was presented with a golden opportunity in extra time when Youssef Chermiti sloppily released the ball, but Adan denied the Belgian and deflected his effort onto the post.

The Sporting stopper was again on hand to deny Gabriel’s powerful header, the Brazilian then saw another effort from the following corner cleared off the line before Ugarte saw red for a second booking for a knock on Bukayo Saka as the game headed for penalties.

After scoring the first seven penalties in the shoot-out, Adan again thwarted Arsenal, getting low to his left to deny Martinelli before Nuno Santos comfortably cleared his attempt to seal a place in the last eight.
