A stellar first-half performance saw Bayern Munich return to winning ways in the Bundesliga and reclaim top spot ahead of Union Berlin.
Bayern Munich secured their first Bundesliga victory of 2023 after a frantic first half paved the way for a 4-2 victory against Wolfsburg.
Kingsley Coman’s brace put the defending champions in control and Thomas Muller then completed his record 427th league appearance for Bayern in style.
Jakub Kaminski struck before the break to give Wolfsburg hope and Bayern then saw Joshua Kimmich given his marching orders for a second bookable offence.
Jamal Musiala and Mattias Svanberg swapped goals to keep the drama flowing as Bayern held on for victory to claim top spot from Union Berlin.
Bayern took the lead after just nine minutes, Coman’s teasing cross into the middle of the pitch finding its way into the far corner of Koen Casteels’ net.
Five minutes later, Coman struck again when he turned in Joao Cancelo’s cross with an expert volley after being left with too much space inside the area.
Muller then got involved to extend the visitors’ lead further when he met Kimmich’s free-kick and headed home his landmark.
Wolfsburg pulled one back before the break, a superb move finished by Kaminski, a first-half substitute for Maxence Lacroix, to play a double with Paul Otavio and coolly slide past Yann Sommer.
The visitors were given a further boost nine minutes after the restart when Bayern were reduced to ten men, Kimmich receiving a second yellow card for a clumsy challenge.
Musiala weaved his way through the Wolfsburg defense to give Julian Nagelsmann’s side some breathing room, although the deficit was reduced to two when Svanberg fired into the net from close range.
There was still time for more drama, Yannick Gerhardt looked set to set up a frantic finish but his goal was disallowed for a foul in stoppage time as Bayern secured all three points.
