Adrien Rabiot got the only goal of the game as Juventus beat Fiorentina, who were denied an equaliser by VAR at the end.

Adrien Rabiot’s header was enough to earn Juventus a 1-0 win over Fiorentina that lifted them into the top half of the Serie A table despite some late controversy.

Rabiot scored the winner in the first half of a classic match between the two old rivals at the Allianz Stadium on Sunday to lift the relegated Bianconeri to ninth place.

Ex-Fiorentina Juve duo Dusan Vlahovic and Federico Chiesa started with Angel Di Maria and the World Cup winners beat them with a clear Rabiot goal.

Vlahovic saw his effort ruled out for offside following a VAR review, but Juve felt the decision was over when Gaetano Castrovilli saw a superb late volley disallowed after the same intervention.

The odds were high in the hot start until Filip Kostick missed a few open pitches.

Juve calculated the advantage after 34 minutes.

Di Maria’s goal was met by a powerful header by Rabiot, and goalkeeper Pietro Terracciano made sure it was on target.

Vlahovic thought he had scored for the first time against Fiorentina last year when he lobbed Terostiano from Kostig’s pass, but it was narrowly ruled out for offside.

Vlahovic substitute Moise Kean was brought down by Terracciano before matching Luka Ovovic’s header.

Fiorentina were then denied a minute later in controversial circumstances, with VAR ruling Luca Ranieri offside before Castroveli found the bottom left corner with a volley.
