Alisson: Liverpool must prove desire remains in Merseyside derby

Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson knows Monday’s meeting with cross-city rivals Everton represents a crucial point in the Reds’ season.

Under-fire Liverpool must prove their desire remains intact when they host Everton in Monday’s Merseyside derby, says goalkeeper Alisson.

Liverpool extended their wait for their first Premier League win of 2023 by beating the Eagles 3-0 last week, leaving Jurgen Klopp’s men 11 points clear in mid-table and four points behind.

Only once in Premier League history has Liverpool started a calendar year on a winless streak (five games in 2017), while also failing to score in the last three games.

Liverpool’s struggles have led to suggestions that the squad needs to be rebuilt after they fell into an unprecedented four-year slump last season, with some questioning Klopp’s position.

Speaking to the club’s website ahead of Monday’s big derby, Alisson said: “It’s a difficult time – we know that.

“I think the first step to changing a situation is to recognize your true situation.

“We did it. We had time this week, we worked hard. We know the importance of the derby.

“We know how important it is to do well, to show our supporters that we still have the will inside us. We will do that and we will win the game.”

Despite Liverpool’s negative results, Alisson believes there have been some positive signs in recent games and is backing Klopp’s side to turn around a miserable season.

“We had some good moments throughout the tournament, so we probably played 75, 80 percent of what we can play,” he said.

“We have to do more, we have to give more to the team – not only from a football point of view, but the excitement, the attitude, supporting our teammates, everything you can do to change our situation.

“We understand that and we’re going to use everything we have for this moment, this moment.
