Lionel Messi has won the World Cup Golden Ball, becoming the first man to do so twice, after inspiring Argentina to a penalty shoot-out victory over France following a scintillating Qatar 2022 final.
It means Messi emulates countryman Diego Maradona once more, too, with Maradona the player of the tournament in Argentina’s previous triumph 36 years ago.
The Argentine may not have enjoyed a vintage campaign in 2021/22, with just six goals scored in Ligue 1, but he added yet more silverware to his ever-expanding trophy cabinet by claiming the Ligue 1 title. He also grabbed 15 league assists in what would’ve been considered an impressive first season for anyone else.
Lionel Messi trophies with Argentina
Messi’s trophy cabinet at the international level has quickly filled over the past two years with the 2022 World Cup his crowning glory.
The Argentine broke his trophy drought at senior level in 2021 as he won the Copa America final at his fourth attempt.
Prior to that, Messi had won titles with Argentina’s U20 and Olympic team over a decade earlier.

What hasn’t Messi won?
The World Cup was long seen as the missing piece in Messi’s title collection.
Argentina’s 2022 triumph over France means he has won the two key pieces of international silverware available to a South American player – a World Cup and Copa America.
At club level, he has won the league with his two sides to date and picked up four UEFA Champions League titles.
With Barcelona, Messi won all possible team trophies available in Spain. He is yet to match this feat in France with PSG, however, with a Coupe de France title still required after they fell short in 2021/22.
Should he win that cup this season and guide PSG to European glory, his trophy cabinet would be unquestionably complete.
