Kalvin Phillips could make his first start for Manchester City when Everton travel to the Etihad Stadium this afternoon.
Having played just one minute of a Premier League game for the club he joined in the summer, Phillips is keen to start on New Year’s Eve despite being branded “overweight” by Pep Guardiola earlier in the week.
The City boss brought Phillips back into the squad to be on the bench against Leeds as he improved his assessment of the England midfielder to a “perfect, sexy body”.
With a busy festive period that sees Guardiola’s men play nine games in five-and-a-half weeks, some rotation will be inevitable.
Kyle Walker, Joao Cancelo, Phil Foden and Bernardo Silva could return to the XI after being on the bench in the win at Leeds.
Julian Alvarez is unavailable after the World Cup final, while Ruben Dias is out with a hamstring injury.
Guardiola confirmed the forward’s return, saying: “[Alvarez] will be back soon, yes. He’ll be here after New Year’s Eve.
“He is coming back fit. He is fit to train at a high level and play and then we will decide.”
Predicted Manchester City XI:
Ederson; Walker, Stones, Laporte, Cancelo; Silva, Phillips, De Bruyne; Foden, Haaland, Grealish.
