Joao Felix became Atletico Madrid’s club-record signing when he arrived for a €126million fee in 2019, but he will likely leave in January.
Chelsea are reportedly closing in on a loan deal for Atletico Madrid club-record signing Joao Felix in January.
Felix, 23, signed in 2019 for €126m after winning the European Golden Boy award with Benfica, beating Atlético’s Thomas Lemar’s previous transfer record by more than €50m.
Despite scoring 33 goals for his new club, Felix has consistently struggled to earn a place in their starting XI, with seven of his 12 LaLiga appearances this season coming as a substitute.
After such a significant investment, Atletico are not yet willing to sell him at a huge loss, and even if they have made him available for transfer, a loan to restore his value seems far more likely.
Chelsea have been actively looking for reinforcements up front, but with significant investment also planned in defence, a cheaper loan could be the solution to their goalscoring woes.
The Telegraph reports that Chelsea and Atletico are deep in discussions over a deal that would include either an option or an obligation to convert the loan into a permanent move at the end of the season.
ESPN added that Atletico will also demand a loan fee in the region of €9 million for a half-season loan.
It remains to be seen whether Chelsea can afford to make the quality move permanent in January, with Fabrizio Romano reporting they are also in the final stages of negotiations to sign the 21-year-old Monaco centre-back for €35m. Benoit Badiashile.
