Switzerland vs Cameroon lineups: Predicted XIs and team news for World Cup 2022 game

Cameroon and Switzerland kick off Group G action at the World Cup with the Swiss hoping their star goalkeeper is fit to start.

Both will be hoping to progress from a tough group that also includes Brazil and Serbia.

Murat Yakin’s Swiss side will be captained by Granit Xhaka in Qatar and has plenty of international experience with particular strength in defence.

Yann Sommer is set to start in goal after overcoming an ankle injury to give Yakin early support ahead of the tournament.

Switzerland were beaten by Ghana in a friendly last week using a back three, although they may revert to a more familiar back four for the World Cup opener.

Denis Zakaria, who has rarely been seen on loan at Chelsea this season, may struggle to force his way into a competitive midfield, while Breel Embolo is likely to start up front as Switzerland look for a more consistent attacking output.

Dubbed the Untamed Lions, Cameroon prepared for the World Cup last Friday with a 1-1 draw against Panama.

Now back under Rigoberto Song, they come into this tournament with few serious injury concerns, although there have been questions about possible interference from above in Song’s 26-man selection for the campaign.

Still, it looks like a strong squad, with midfielder Andre-Frank Anguissa likely to play a key role after an excellent start to the season at Napoli.

Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo was a French youth international but opted to play for Cameroon, the country of his father, during the summer, and is competing for a spot in the forward line with plenty of options at Song’s disposal.

Predicted Switzerland XI (4-2-3-1):

Sommer; Widmer, Schar, Akanji, Rodriguez; Freuler, Xhaka; Shaqiri, Sow, Vargas; Embolo.

Predicted Cameroon XI (4-3-3):

Onana; Ebosse, Castelletto, N’Koulou, Fai; Ntcham, Anguissa, Gouet; Mbeumo, Aboubakar, Choupo-Moting.
