Newcastle United have reportedly expressed their interest in signing out-of-favour Real Madrid midfielder Marco Asensio.
Asensio, 26, made his debut for Madrid in 2016 and has made 244 appearances and 50 goals in all competitions for the club in the seven seasons since.
Despite scoring 10 goals in LaLiga in 2021-22, Asensio has been relegated to the bench this season and will be a free agent next year unless he is offered a new deal.
With Asensio in the final year of his contract, Milan were the team most closely linked with the Spain international until Calciomercato added that Newcastle had thrown their hat in the ring.
Despite Asensio being available on a free transfer soon, the contract demands are likely to rule out a number of high-profile suitors, but given Newcastle’s new spending power and inability to land some key targets, he should be within their financial means.
Asensio is set to represent Spain at the World Cup, with a report from AS claiming he is hoping to earn a new contract in Madrid with impressive performances.
