Bayern Munich have confirmed that winger Leroy Sane has been diagnosed with a torn hamstring, sparking fears he could miss the World Cup.

The Germany international scored and had two assists in Sunday’s 5-0 win over Freiburg but was forced off with around 15 minutes remaining after suffering what has since been confirmed as a torn hamstring.

No time frame was set for Sane’s recovery in Bayern’s brief statement, with the Bundesliga side simply saying they would be without the winger “for the time being”.

Although Sane’s injury is not believed to be serious, the problem for Germany manager Hansi Flick is timing, with the World Cup set to start just five weeks after his injury.

Flick is expected to name a preliminary squad in the coming days, which is likely to include Sane, but the final 26-man squad must be submitted to FIFA by the evening of November 14, leaving the winger with limited time to prove his fitness.

Sane has 11 goals in 47 appearances for Germany and has been a near-constant starter over the last two years.
