Marco van Basten knows how difficult it is to score goals, having bee a striker himself and becoming a footballing legend representing the Dutch football team and AC Milan.
The football icon shed light on a variety of things, and is consistently shocked by football fans who believe Cristiano Ronaldo is better than Lionel Messi.
“Cristiano Ronaldo is a great player, but those who say he is better than Lionel Messi knows nothing about football, or say bad things about him,” Van Basten told the Italian newspaper Corriere Dello Sport.
“He [Leo Messi] is different. It’s impossible to imitate and it’s impossible to repeat. A player like him emerges every 50 or 100 years. At a young age, he fell into the pit of football genius.”
When it comes to listing his all-time players, however, Van Basten did not mention the former Barcelona captain.
“Pele, Diego Maradona, and Johan Cruyff are the top three players in history,” Van Basten said.
“As a kid, I wanted to be like Cruyff. He was my friend. I miss him. Pele and Maradona were also amazing.”
